A Letter to My Younger Self

Believe In Your Own Strength

You are so much stronger than you think. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. No matter what life may throw at you, you can handle it. It is hard for your parents to be constantly yelling at you and at each other, but trust me, you can make your relationships better. Even though their relationship is not perfect and they used to have more problems then they do now, nobody is perfect, and you will use those experiences to see what a healthy relationship does not look like.

The way you are treated at home definitely has a large impact on your school life too. Just take a step back and look at the big picture because when you do, you will realize no matter what anyone says, nobody is nice when they are in middle school. Personally, I got ditched by the person who I thought was my best friend. Needless to say, her and I don’t talk anymore. And that is okay. Everyone comes into your life for a reason and when they have served their purpose, let them go. I definitely learned that in college too. Whoever you decide to hook up with in college serves their purpose and usually leaves so don’t get too emotionally attached to anyone or anything.

Life moves so fast so try to take a step back and soak it all in once in a while. I joined a sorority, Delta Zeta, while I was in college. Even though there were a lot of lows, there were so many highs, and I would not change it for the world. Getting through those lows is what helps you appreciate the highs. Although you may not think you get through the two probationary periods they put you through, which involved not being able to go to any events and have the social life that you wanted to, causing depression, anxiety and a load of other forms of mental health turmoil, you are so much stronger than you think. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. No matter what life may throw at you, you can handle it.

Remember self-care, that’s what my therapist always told me. It is okay to be selfish sometimes. Taking a night to yourself and relaxing with a cup of tea, a face mask and a good show on Disney + will be more nourishing than you think.  Going to a therapist was the best thing I ever did because I have learned so much about myself and how my past has made me the person I am today. Every experience you have shapes who you are and your values. In Delta Zeta, I have reflected a lot on the values that the sorority stands for and how those align with my personal values. Joining Delta Zeta has challenged me to critically think about who I am fundamentally and what I value in romantic and platonic relationships.

It is so important to believe in yourself and be confident with who you are. You cannot control the actions of others so all you can do is be the best version of yourself. Fuel yourself with good food and good self care habits. When you are healthy and feeling good about yourself, you can handle anything that life throws at you!
